love yourself guitar tutorial hey guys it's dave tran here andwelcome to another guitar zero to hero tutorial in today's lesson i'll beshowing you how to play love yourself by justin bieber ed sheeran and co-wrote thesong and everything he touches turns to gold basically i'm going to be runningthrough two different versions of the song for you now the first version is just going tobe very cold based and it's gonna be probably more for beginners and thosewho just want to be playing and singing along to the song and the second versionwill be exactly how i'm assuming
insurance place it in the recording andthat's going to utilize a bit more finger picking a little more forintermediate players but beginners should be able to pick it up as well alright so for the first version or weneed his guitar and standard tuning and i kept on 4th friend the first version will be utilizing sixchord shapes those chord shapes our c major g / be so that is just a g with that the topbase note i mana
d mana if and jay i'm gonna break this song up into threedifferent sections we're going to have this kind of a pre-course and then we'regonna have a chorus and they're all pretty straightforward have their ownseparate structure and have their own so the strumming pattern starting with thefirst we have two lines of chords we have se j / bay hey vana
for the first line for the second linewe have de mana say and then j / me this song is being composed in a verystrict back manner it doesn't have any drums and as suchthe guitar is written to carry that picasa development in the way of a slapor mu that basis slaps / mutes what ever you want to call them i going to generally be played on thesecond and fourth date throughout the entire song i would sayand this is applicable to the first
version i'm showing you and the secondversion i'm showing you now for the first vote to make that the castle ofnoise it's basically a down strong however thepalms going to be muting all the strings quite heavily not likely but quite heavily luck in themiddle here and when you come down it should sound just muted like thesnare it also helps to let go of any notes that you're holding down with yourfretting hand the strumming pattern for this verse is going to be it down upslap three times and then a single slap by itself
when i say slap it same thing as a mutebasically so in context with the cords it should sound something like this downthat down slap down slap down ha down ha down clapslap already paid that one more time one right slap down i'm slap slap their down down slap and that's it for this now we go to the pre-course which hasthree lines of course alone for the first line we have a bona yeah
and say and that's repeated twice the secondline is exactly the same but it has an additional cord the g at the end so a mana and and g and finally the last line is a mana ya and then g now the strong pattern for this precourse is going to be extension
basically of what we learnt in the verseso that down up slap that we learn in the verse is going to be extended andverbally it should sound like it down up slap down slap and into exceptional sound lockdown slapped down slap down slap down slap now for that first line you'regoing to be changing the cord at that second down stroke so going from the aminor you go to the f on that second down stroke and when it goes to the seathat just stays on to that cord for a whole strong pattern
so the first line should sound somethinglike this down i was that yeah slap and one more time down that slapdown a lap down slap and if i were to be counting thisin one and two and three and four and the chord change is actually on the enddebate after the to the upper if you will settle if i was can along it wouldbe like this one and two and three and four and one two three ball and one and two and three and fourand during notice how the two and the four our way the slaps always co
now that's drawing pattern that we justlearned is applicable to that second line of course as well now the only difference is that is anextra cord thrown in and where that changes from the same to the jay isagain on that second dance term of that strumming pattern that we learned so ifi was to play it slowly it will sound like something like this down slap there slap down a lap down slap that's the second line notice againwhen i start the court the strumming
pattern again on the c to g so down slap down that second down strong iswhere that chord changes and one more time down that down up down up down slap and lastly for this third line ofchords the atf is exactly the same as we'veplayed previously the only difference is the g which isjust all down strokes as a build-up to the chorus and that is strummed fivetimes so playing that third line will see on something like this one
and now we get to the course which isfairly simple and it's just a matter of timing the strong patent is very simple it's just all down starks and slaps /means incense the codes we have two lines that we need to learn they aresaying j i mana and the first line and then for the secondline we have say gee now the first and third chords for bothlines are always played on the one be the second and fourth chords for bothlines are always playing on the end bait
after the three so if i was to can alongusing a one and two and three and four end first and third chord on the onebait second and fourth course in each of these lines is on the end date afterthree this will make more sense when i play itand can along also note that the slap / - always hasto be on the second and fourth be so we need to throw them in between the chordsthat we are stomping down as well this will all make more sense when iplay and can along one and two and three and four and onetwo and three and four and one two and three and four and one two andthree and one
blue and three and four and one two andthree and one two and three four and one and two and three and four and one and three and four and that's everythingyou need to dive version 1 of playing this song now i'm just going to be playing theverse pre-chorus and course all in a row so you have some context also can'talong using a one and two and three and four and to help you with the tommy ok 30
333333 three and four and all right now we getto the second variation of this song which is how it is played on therecording and the more difficult version and you'll need to take the tape off theguitar and so you'll just have standard shooting with no k bye you won't need a pick for this this willbe finger picked so to start the first roof we have a hammer on that goes from the7th fret to the not fret on the bass string
now what a hammer on is is where youplay the first note just once like it once and then with your fretting handuse a hammering action to get that next note so i'm onlyplucking at once on the first night but the fretting hand amazon so you hearthat audible second note on the ninth fretnow that is played in conjunction with the tom open e string so you don't haveto bring anything there you play them at the same time to getout so using your middle finger to plot the high bay string and using your thumbto hit the low e all in one go
similar to the first variation in thissong is gonna be a slap on the second and fourth bates throughout and to dothat with no pic basically what you're doing is droppingyour hands onto the strings for that the customers feel right so after we've played that first hammeron night just before we go into the slap you're going to plug that pipe a stringagain and it's almost like a passing note it's it it's play just before you do the slaps oh togetherunderstand something like this so it's a passing notes so you plug inmy baby and slap straight away and
together it's like that now if you don'twant to play that hammer on and make it a bit more simple you can simply justhit that not fret on the bass string with him with your ring finger and doeverything exactly the same except no hammer on just hit the nine togetherwith the open a you can do it that way if you prefer so that's the first chord in that roofbit and if we break it up into a chance between those slaps it's going to be alot easier to remember so that's your first chunk for exampleso the hammer on the passing i plot and slap
now the second chunk as i call it willbe with your index finger on the 6th fret and your ring finger on the 7thfret so basically from the non you just slid down to friends now the plucking principal and the slap are all the same so you're going to hitthe bass note and that high note at the same time for the first block and then before you go into the slapyou're going to have a passing note which is the high string high notes onthe bass string so and slapped down so altogether that second chance will beboth strings together the high string by
itself and then the slap and one moretime all right and now the third chunk that we're goingto learn is that exact same position just move everything two frets down theplucking and the passing out and slap will be exactly the same as well so both together the high one by itself and slap alright so let's play those three chanceall together 12
all right and now there is no realfourth chunk all there is is just a pause and thenone more slap on the for bait so all together again so let's call that the first phrase withthose four chance that we just learned and the second prize is very similar andways of picking and timing and business different positions so the first chunk for the second phraseis going to be up at the 9th fret and the 10th fret so you can still you canjust take that same position that you had previously in the first race andslide it all the way up to 9 and 10 and
the pickings exactly the same both bassnote and high note together hi not by itself and come down for aslap and the second chunk is going to be down at seven threat so you slide your fingers down 7th fretand the ring finger will be on not fret now this is the only different one shapeto all the other months all the other ones didn't have a threat in betweenthem but this chunk does so beware that 7th fret of the bass note now that's on the a string margin on thetop string and then the keynote is on seven and the pickings exactly the sameso base and high note together
i know i sat down and now the thirdcheck for the second phrase is going to be at six and seven so just slide that down same picking andthen the fourth chunk of that is nothing basically just a pause and slap as wehave in that first phrase so altogether the second phrase with the four chunksis going to be alright and all together playing the first and second phrasewhich constitutes the verse it should sound something like this now i'm going to play the first andsecond frys all together as the full vers roof where you paid it twice andhave a zoom up of my picking hand just
so you can say what i'm doing with that ok should sound something like this oneand 3333 now for the pre-course in chorus it'smade up of four chords essentially and three of those chords are going to bepower cords so you don't know how to apply a power cord you should refer to my video that are atleast a couple weeks back on how to play power cords but basically what you needto know how to play is the the open e major chord so that's fun and easy on i c sharp minor power cord
so that's just a power cord with theroot node on c sharp which is the fourth fret on the fifth string a be power cordwhich is just the same shape again on on the 2nd fret of the 5th string and following a power cord which isbasically just a monocle just chopped so it just has a three-top bass notes nowin this instance when you're playing that a tail cord what you should do isfinger it with your ring finger on the fourth string and your pinkie on the 3rdstring of the second fret now that's going to just make sure that yourtransitions between that power cord the b power cord and the c sharp chordare going to be very easy
you're not going to have to change yourfingers around too much alright so starting for the pre-coursethe first call is going to be the c sharp power cord and now we're going tobe plucking this with the thumb on the fifth string the index finger on thefourth string and the middle finger on the 3rd string now i know this contradicts things i'vesaid earlier where you should try to keep these three fingers on the higherstrings and just met them only to those strings however there are exceptions to the ruleand in this case you can use your index
on the higher based on here on thefourth string and your middle finger on the 3rd string so you can play more thantogether on the same time that for that same chum-pal cord yeah that's gonna be the first knownright and similarly to diverse there arepassing notes that we're going to be playing and the passing notes herebefore we go for the slap is going to be just using our index finger and middlefinger on the those strings so we're going to play more to get a burst withthe bass note in the passing night is done them to buy themselves and then weslap so so all together and that my one
slap all right and the next quarter after that is goingto be the a power cord so we just slide ring finger down and pinky finger downall the way to the second phone and that's where that keeping playing thatcord like that comes in handy because it's easy to transition all right so that called there is playedon the end bait after the two so one two and one and two and ok and after it's played
we don't have don't have anything elseuntil we have another slap on the fourth date so one and two and three and fourand one and two and three and four and slow one and two and three and four and nowwe're going to have the same picking pattern for the next section which isgoing to be out a major chord but there is no called change so we go we're going to be plucking the open basenote what are we going to be plucking thesame strings that we did for the other notes so the fourth string in the thirdstring with the same thing is so all of
them the same time for the first one and we have that passing note againwhich is my notes just together by themselves and the slap and then afterthe slap on the update we're going to hit that quote again until the full faith family slap again 12 ndering and 41 and the end during thewar so get that gets repaid it twice andafter that we're going to be playing basically the exact same thing exceptfor adding one extra cord so where we ended on the a mage on
that plug on the end date after the twois not going to be on the aid and it's now going to be on that baby power cord ok and we're going to be plugging the5th string 4th string and third string so i will sound like this so altogether we have our first linethat we play twice and then and a second line here is going to be exactly thesame with an extra cord that be so apply them three together that way when we get into this last lineis going to be exactly the same the first bit anyway so that from thec-sharp have board to the a
it's going to be exactly the same andthe only difference is after that we have a buildup which is just the baypower cord stem five times now you can strum this in any two ways without a picyou use your the soft video a thumb that's a little harder i like to usesort of the corner edge of my nail on my index finger and almost use that like amakeshift pic and strum that down five times so altogether the pre-chorus will soundsomething like this now i'm just going to apply that preycourse with a close up of my pic again so you can see what i'm doing
there's nothing really special going onwith this fretting hand it's just the chord shapes that are asshown on the tabs are you don't really get a close up with that here we go mmm for and that's it for the prey coursenow the course is going to be using those same four chords now it's going to go from the a major tothe being now god is a sharp outboard and the gang
in the first line and the second isgoing to be a god to the bait a board and back to the lord that a similarfashion to what we had in the first variation the first and the third cordsare we played on the one be the second and fourth chords are going to be playedon the end bait after the three again we have to get theslack in the second and fourth date and everything slots in between that so our first chord again is the e a second quarter is the bay for thethird quarter is the same sharp 4th chord is the hey there and then for thesecond line the first is a again
the second the baby and then the third is the backto the egg and then there's no fourth cold there it's just slapped by itself so it shouldsound something like this one and two and three and four and one two three andone two three and four one two three one two three and four and now i'm going toplay this again with a close up of my pic and the beginning and he's reallydoing anything special but it might help you just figure out what's going on withthe slaps and the pics in between here we go one and two and three andfour and one and two and three and four
and one and three and 133 and full andone and three and four and one and three and four and one three and three and four and so that'sit for the second variation now i'll just quickly play that versepre-chorus and chorus all together and then i will proceed to sing along so youhave the song in context again don't mind my saying not much of a singer butit should help out 333 times as you and the clothes you getin using my name you think you brought back from crying well
and i don't wanna write a song cause ididn't want anyone thinking i still get to you still hit my phone up and baby ibe movin on and i think you should be somethin i don't wanna hold back maybeyou should know that my mama don't like you and she likes everyone and i never like to admit that i waswrong i've been so count didn't see one go away now i know im gonna see been my you theway you love that show maybe you love your self
and if you think that i'm still holdinon to somethin you know your so that's all there is to love yourselfby justin bieber it's a fairly simple song you just needto break it down and remember to follow those timingrules which i've demonstrated the main one being that you're slaps have to bealways on the second and the fourth throughout that whole song everything else sort of fits around thatso i hope you enjoyed it leave your comments below if you haveany questions about how to play the song or any clarification and i'll try mybest to answer
